Taiwan's Pride: Taipei 101

When you stand in front of Taipei 101 and look up, you will understand why it is Taiwan's pride!
Do you know where the world’s tallest building it is? Flapping through the tellurion, if you stop right in the location of Taiwan, then you’ve got it right. Yes, the world’s tallest building is located in the capital city of Taiwan, Taipei, which is called Taipei 101. The height of Taipei101 is 1,670.60 ft. The building is so tall that it has received lots of awards such as the Emporis Skyscraper Award in 2004. It also has been hailed as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World and Seven Wonders of Engineering.

Maybe you may wonder why it is called “Taipei 101.” Why is the number “101”? It might not hard to guess because of the height of 101 floors. But there are more meanings behind this number! The number also reflects its location in Taipei’s international business district, 101 mailing code. To go further, it also symbolizes high ideals by going one better on 100, which is a Chinese traditional number of perfection.

Taipei 101 rises straight up in this earthquakes-frequent country and has no fear to face the strong wind of typhoons. It is because Taipei 101 is designed to withstand these natural calamities. The stability of the design became evident when a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan on March 31, 2002.

There are lots of activities held in Taipei 101. On New Year’s Eve, fireworks will launch from Taipei 101. It lightens up the whole Taipei and brings the new hope for the upcoming year. Here is the clip of the fireworks in 2009:

Although another competitor, Buri Dubai in Dubai, will overtake the title of the world’s tallest building in September 2009, Taipei 101 is still Taiwan’s pride.

I hold it true, whatever befall;

I feel it, when I sorrow most;

it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

【Revise】Stinky Tofu is the special food you cannot miss in Taiwan

Come and give it a try. You will have a great impression on the sense of taste and the smell!

When people are asked what representative Taiwanese food is, stinky tofu often rings a bell. Stinky tofu is the unofficial national snack food of Taiwan. It is really popular. You can find it everywhere at the roadside stands and at the night market.

Why is stinky tofu so well-known? It is notable because of its “stink”. Stinky tofu is a form of fermented tofu, which is usually marinated in fermented vegetables, herbs or dried fish. Stinky tofu is cooked in various culinary skills. There are fried stinky tofu, stinky tofu boiled soup, basic plain stinky tofu, stinky tofu with pickled veggies and etc. You can choose your favorite and have a taste!

Stinky tofu has an extremely opposite appreciation. Some people stay away from it because of its awful smell. For them, the odor of stinky tofu smells like rotten food so that they are afraid to give it a try. However, some people are addicted to it because it tastes really delicious. Don’t be scared by its name and smell! It tastes much better than it sounds and smells. Even some foreigners love it. The host Andrew Zimmern in the TV series Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern tasted stinky tofu and commented that “it reminds me a really great cheese…it’s delicious.”
